HERFST.

*Binnen blijven? Kaarten schrijven! Omdat schrijven leuk is. Omdat post krijgen nog leuker is. Karmapunten!

Dus. Voor nu.
Iedereen heeft buren. Gelukkig wonen die van mij dichtbij.

BEEN THERE

FOMS
Fear  of  Missing  out  on  Something
àThe emotion that compels you to join your friends, colleagues or peers at a social event, when you know you shouldn't, can’t, or actually really don't feel like it.
à “I was really tired from the night before but I got a serious case of the FOMS so went out anyway.”

I have to admit to having the ‘FOMS’ on a regular base.
Not particularly proud to reveal this, but my therapist always tells me to share my shortcomings so I will come across as more approachable to the average.

For me, this FOMS-ordeal started at a young age. I remember to pretend to be clinically dead when my parents –God bless their bank account- urged me to “Come with!” to their farting old friends. Brilliant as my staged death act always kicked off; the minute my parents left me for fake-dead in my crafty cardboard coffin, I just KNEW that my theatrically living brothers would be rewarded with the best home baked cookies at grown-ups Scotch-time.
Immediately the FOMS would kick in without repentance and my coffin would be soaked with my blue-est bodily fluids by the time they returned with perfectly crafted crumbs stuck to their stupid smiles.

Sad thing is though, that now that I am ten (twenty-five *AAB) years older, I still don’t seem to have learned a thing.

I partly blame it on the industry I (pretend to *AAB) work in.
Apart from the cast of ‘Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden’ and Ben & Dean Sounders’ parents, I believe people working in the advertising-industry to be the most exposed to potential FOMS.
We have Pre-Cannes borrels, Cannes-themselves borrels, After-Cannes borrels, Don’t-Forget-About-Cannes borrels, Cannes-Picture-Swopping borrels, X-Pollination, Pop Up Petanque, massive Massive borrels and of course 365 –ex-tre-me-ly important- Annual Award Shows.

All of the above certainly is one of the attractions of the industry to me, but it can make me quite anxious too.
I believe the constant stream of information, multiplied by the countless social-networking sites, has made this often well-disguised phenomenon even bigger and more intrusive in our self-assured adult life. After all, it's easy to feel you're missing out when the event announcements and all their blissful live-feed pictures are popping up on your timeline when at that same moment you are picking your nose in front of your cat.

An example:
This year I skipped Cannes’ Lions.
Sounded very mature and cocksure at first.
But because of the extreme blizzards and the devastating showers that had taken Amsterdam by storm, I was basically imprisoned with Facebook as my only connection to the ‘scene’.
Whilst eating moldy pumpernickel bread, I saw steamy French baguettes, richly decorated with Tim Mintiens' famous BBQ-prawns flashing by on my once so me-dominated newsfeed. All this sunny food was impeccably sandwiched between perfectly bronzed boobs and shimmering pools.

Man, did I cry.

The fact that the bronzed boobs belonged to my ex-boyfriend -who seemed to have a perfect good time without me- as well as the fact that the pool used as the setting had been that very same pool I once so joyfully peed in, made it even more unbearable for me to watch.

Sure. Deep down inside, I do realize that without having a part of my left earlobe tagged once a day, in a way social life still can be somewhat fulfilling.
I mean; I know my parents will still love me regarding my lack of social recognitions, and cats and hamsters don’t even know what Facebook-invites are.
But hey, despite them positives:
At the end I’m still that living little dead girl laying in a cardboard coffin, just wishing to have ‘been there’ at cookie-time.

The Ultimate City-trip

Although the city of Amsterdam still bravely clings on to the brand-image as ultimate party-city, we’ve recently dropped down one whopping point on the Lonely Planet Top 10 Best Party City list. #2. Just before the awesome city of Hyderabad (?).
As much as this fact gives me a very welcome reason to write this column, it does hurt. I’ve always hugely liked our leading brand-image because it makes me look real badass to foreigners. Also, it attracts that awesome kind of people that don’t give a shit about wearing pants. But most of all: Amsterdam has always had the ambition and potential to put our cute little country on the overwhelmingly huge map.

Okay; nowadays San Francisco holds the best weed, Berlin really knows her MDMA and to make things worse for us the Mayor of Amsterdam banned magic mushrooms from our streets after one too many tourists went flying off a building. Yet another bad PR stunt for our brand-position.
But then, on one rainy afternoon whilst doing nothing more than some serious field research on the above at a coffee shop, a friendly tourist sang to me -in a soft 80’s voice- the poetic and promising: “The Amsterdamned Mushroom is back in bloom, back in bloom. Mushroom-room.”
Wow.
Because I’ve never done drugs in my life and my parents read my columns, I assigned the brave kid to be my undercover agent and immediately decided to send him off on his first mission to discover the hidden Magic M on the streets. Oh my, was I psyched!! This would really help me build a stronger case to present to the organic vegans at Lonely Planet!

Let’s give this Donny Brasco a little background first -to make him even more likable:
It turned out it was his second visit to the Dam. The first time was less than memorable, he said, because he doesn’t remember:
After checking in at the Bulldog Hotel –awesome - he ate some spacecake, didn't think it was working so he washed it down with a hash-shake. As told by his friends, he couldn't move or speak for a day and then was escorted on to the plane in an electronic wheelchair. The only thing he said during the 5h flight back home was a constant repeat of the brilliant Homer Simpson-phrase “Operator! Please give me the number for 911!”

So, this time around he wisely skipped desert and went straight for the tea.
With a sign around his neck to remind him he was incapable of flying, I sent my brave little soldier off into the field.
After about an hour I received a text stating that he had bought and absorbed the urban fungi without any kerfuffle. No questions asked and no passport-registration needed. (Take notice, mister Mayor.)

Soon thereafter I had to calm him down a bit because his cup of coffee at Burger King actually turned out to be a nitro bomb planted there by Buddy Holly. Hey, we’ve all been there: It meant he was getting all warmed up. Great! I poured myself some more herbal tea, put a blank sheet in my typewriter and waited anxiously for the USP-evidence to put in my winning LP-presentation.

I will spare you all communication sent to me in the following hours, but to give you something to keep your kids off drugs with:
·       “I bought a cat. I’ve set it free now. His name was Freedom McGee.”
·       “Sally Spectra!”
·       “My leg is asleep, so we’ll have to whisper.”
·       “I just coughed up some of my brain. Hopefully it was not an important parsk of my broiwn.”
·       And, my personal favorite:  “I am so hungry, I could ride a horse.”
Great stuff.

But then, about three hours after kick-off:
“WHERE THE FUCK AM I.”
To protect him from yet another luring bad trip, I calmly responded; “You, my trooper, are in Amsterdam.”
 “Amsterdam?!
No shit!
How the bloody hell did I end up in Denmark?!”

Well fuck me Alice and leave me pantyless.
I resign.
Just give us back our well-earned #1 position and I’ll promise to like you on Facebook, my lonely Planets.

Stop badmouthing my vagina!

As a vain woman I have been feeling really offended by some of the ads that target my vagina as -an unwilling prospect. The vajayjay has become big business on TV the past years.
To be fair: Advertising has always been notorious for telling women that their bodies are unclean. But recently the vagina has blossomed into a real prime-time matter.

Has it ever occurred to the advertisers that women might find this sort of ads for feminine hygiene products to be dreadfully embarrassing and annoying?
I mean- would Mr. Brand manager be comfortable when a peer is modeling an itchy and smelly groin on public television whilst drinking wine with a lady in front of the TV? I guess not. So, every time our vagina is explained to detail on TV in a room full of men, we shrink a bit down there. Think about that, would you, Mr. Brand manager?

The worst one of the bunch is the latest Always ad. The ad starts off with stating that ‘you have to steer clear of standing next to people while on your period’.
Excuse me?
Do I live in a fucking tribe in Africa where they would lock me up in a shed during my monthly madness?
They then continue explaining that whilst being on your period, you smell like crap.
What the fuck, dude?

Not only our periods are targeted during a TV dinner. Recently there has been an ad running stating that one in ten females have issues with keeping their pants dry. They show women mid-thirty scared to run to make the bus, ‘cause they’d wet themselves’. Maybe they should take into consideration that one in ten females is older then 65. They don’t tend to run anyways, so no harm there.

Like I said; vagina bashing isn't just a recent trend. I remember when growing up my little brother really freaked out about all that was referred to as ‘what girls get’. My mom and me got randomly booed at whenever he’d seen a tampon ad.
But at least the tampon was sugarcoated back then.
(To my great pleasure my brother has been working at Procter & Gamble for the last 2 years.
His accounts include Always.
He knows more about monthly periods than Oprah Winfrey.
Luckily for him, he’s no Mr. Brand manager.)

So, to conclude this stinky proposition against commercial feminism, I just want to say to all y’all boys who think we girls are bloody and smelly monsters:
Not all of us bleed like we got stabbed in the vajayjay by Michael Myers.
Not all of us pee in our pants when excited.
Not all of us smell like a harbor during mussel-season.
And while we’re at it; –come on – it’s bull-crap to use a female in anti-diarrhea commercials. We all know that girls don’t poop.

We waren namelijk in Parijs!
Ons avontuur was begonnen.
Zo kon Daisy alles zien.
Oké, we zijn niet in alle achtbanen geweest omdat ik (DAISY!! Mietjuhh!) dat niet durfde;
’s Avonds werden we nogmaals getrakteerd:
Disney Parijs bestond 20 jaar.
En had daarvoor een laser-licht-water-vuurwerk-show gemaakt, die werd geprojecteerd op Het Paleis.
Peter Pan speelde daarin de hoofdrol.
Het verhaal was reuze spannend.
Want Peter Pan raakte zoek!
DAAR IS PETER PAN!”

Tres biên et to infitity and beyond!

Mijn Oma

Zo'n twee jaar geleden is mijn oma overleden.
En dat is triest.
Want mijn Oma was geweldig.
Mijn lieve mama’s lieve mama.
Oma maakte gedurende haar 58-jarige huwelijk elke woensdag gehaktballen.
Zoals de meeste oma’s dat doen. Woensdag is nou eenmaal gehaktdag.
Helaas overleed mijn Opa bijna 5 jaar geleden.
Oma was haar maatje kwijt.
